Albert Schweitzer Portrait by Gene Scheer -- Inspired by Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, Albert Schweitzer Portrait was conceived by Thurston Moore, music by Gene Scheer, adapted and arranged by Jonathan McPhee, orchestrated by Gary Fry
The work is commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Dr. Schweitzer’s only visit to America and the world premiere of the Symphonic version of this new work will be presented May 9, 2009, by the Longwood Symphony Orchestra in Boston, directed by Jonathan McPhee.
The Longwood Symphony Orchestra is committed to performing community service while presenting concerts of musical excellence. Every one of the symphony’s concerts benefit related nonprofit organizations in the Boston community. The musicians of the LSO, many of them health care professionals, represent eighteen of Boston’s major medical institutions, as well as the teaching, business and arts profession. They perform annually in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, and play a summer concert at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade.
The United States premiere of the Albert Schweitzer Portrait for Organ and Narrator will take place June 6, at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, University of Chicago, with Chapel Organist Thomas Weisflog. It was there that Dr. Schweitzer received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1949.
The World Premiere for Organ and Narrator will be held in the historic Roskilde Domkirk Cathedral in Denmark, date to be set. Dr. Schweitzer gave two concerts in the Cathedral in 1920 and 1927 and the Cathedral hosted two productions of the Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach.

I cannot avoid compassion of everything that is called life.
That is the beginning and the foundation of morality."
